In the qualified-plan market, many lifetime income solutions are adjacent to CDAs but use different legal or product structures. This page distinguishes confirmed CDAs from adjacent annuity or guaranteed-income designs. A product is not labeled a CDA on this page unless a primary source clearly supports that classification.
Many in-plan 401(k) and defined contribution retirement income products are not necessarily true contingent deferred annuities. The qualified-plan market includes a range of lifetime income structures, including:
Insurance contracts issued to a plan sponsor rather than to individual participants. The annuity obligation runs to the plan, not directly to the participant.
Contracts that provide income beginning at a future date (such as age 80 or 85), purchased during the accumulation phase. Sometimes called longevity annuities or qualifying longevity annuity contracts (QLACs) in the qualified-plan context.
Managed fund structures that incorporate an annuity or guaranteed income component within a target-date fund wrapper. The annuity may be a group annuity, a deferred income annuity, or another structure.
Guaranteed lifetime withdrawal benefit features embedded in managed account or collective investment trust structures. These may resemble CDA overlays but may use different legal forms.
Investment strategies designed to provide systematic withdrawals over a retirement period, without an insurance guarantee. These are not annuities and do not provide a lifetime income guarantee backed by an insurer.
If you are researching a specific in-plan product and want to determine whether it is a CDA, review the plan's summary plan description, the insurance contract or group annuity contract, and any regulatory filings associated with the product. Consult a qualified financial or legal professional for product-specific guidance.
